Aikins Scholarship in English

Awarded to an outstanding full-time second-year English Specialist student who has taken at least three full-course equivalents in English.

Jane Austen Society of North America—Toronto Chapter Scholarship

An in-course award with financial need requirements for a Department of English program student demonstrating academic merit in courses (e.g., ENG322Y1, ENG323H1) related to major eighteenth- and nineteenth-century authors, including Jane Austen.

Avie Bennett Prize in Canadian Literature

Awarded to an undergraduate student who has submitted the best essay in Canadian Literature. Students may nominate themselves for this award, or they can be nominated by their instructor. Essays written during the 2023-2024 academic year with a focus on Canadian Literature will be considered. Students may correct such things as typos but they should not revise the essays originally submitted to a course. 

Essays must be submitted in digital format (Word or PDF) and sent directly to Professor Karina Vernon at karina.vernon@utoronto.ca by Monday, June 3, 2024.

Attachments should be saved under the student's last name and the prize's name (e.g. surname_AvieBennett_EssayPrize.doc) and the email subject heading should state: "Avie Bennett Essay Prize."

Beverley Beetham Endersby Prize

Awarded to a Department of English program student who has demonstrated "an exceptional understanding of, and respect for, the logic, structure, and history of the English language" (e.g., ENG240Y, ENG285H, ENG385H).

Department of English Book Prize

Awarded to the most outstanding third-year English Specialist student, taking into consideration the difficulty of the courses taken.

Department of English Prize

Honours excellent performance by a second- or third-year English Major or Specialist.

C.B. Farrar Undergraduate Scholarship in English

Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to a full-time Department of English program student.

John King Scholarship in English Language and Literature

Awarded to an outstanding third-year English Specialist.

Winston and Stephanie Ling Award in English

Awarded to a third- or fourth-year Department of English program student who demonstrates academic excellence and financial need.

Dr. Arnold W. and Edna M. Macpherson Memorial Scholarship

Awarded to a third-year student enrolled in the Specialist program in English.

Walter O'Grady Undergraduate Scholarship in Eighteenth-Century English Literature

Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to a second- or third-year English Major or Specialist studying eighteenth-century literature (e.g., ENG306Y, ENG337H).

Walter O'Grady Undergraduate Scholarship in English Literature

Awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to a second- or third-year English Major or Specialist.

E.J. Pratt Award in Poetry

Competition open to any undergraduate or graduate student based on the poem or group of related poems judged to be the most outstanding submission. Students may apply through University Registrar's Office by November 1, 2024 deadline.

Julia Reibetanz Prize for the Best Essay on Romantic Poetry

Awarded to an undergraduate student who has submitted the best essay in Romantic Poetry. Students may nominate themselves for this award, or they can be nominated by their instructor. Essays written during the 2023-2024 academic year will be considered. Students from all campuses are welcome to apply.

Please submit a brief cover note and the essay you would like to nominate by May 1, 2024 to Vanessa Andres, UTSG English Undergraduate Advisor at english.undergraduate@utoronto.ca. The attached file should be entitled: surname_RomanticPoetry_EssayPrize.doc

Elinore Siminovitch Memorial Bursary

Awarded to a female undergraduate student who has shown proficiency in writing in the field of English literature and has demonstrated financial need.

Awarded to a female undergraduate student who has shown proficiency in writing in the field of English literature.

John W. Spitzer Scholarship

Awarded to Department of English undergraduate program students on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

Anne Tanenbaum Scholarship in English Literature (Second Year)

Awarded to an outstanding second-year Department of English program student.

Anne Tanenbaum Scholarship in English Literature (Third Year)

Awarded to an outstanding third-year Department of English program student.

Christopher Wallis Undergraduate Scholarship in English

Awarded to a Department of English program student on the basis of financial need and academic achievement.

Milton Wilson Prize

Awarded to the first-year undergraduate student who obtains the highest marks in two English courses while completing a five-course load.
