Professor Angela Esterhammer Awarded 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship

April 23, 2025 by The Department of English

We’re thrilled to share that Professor Angela Esterhammer, former Principal of Victoria College and a distinguished scholar of English literature, has been named a 2025 Guggenheim Fellow.

One of only four Canadians to receive the award this year, and the sole recipient in the field of English literature, Professor Esterhammer will use the fellowship to further her research on the prolific 19th-century Scottish writer and entrepreneur John Galt. Her project explores Galt’s writing within the context of Romantic-era print culture and international literary networks, focusing on themes of identity, power, and community that continue to resonate today.

Professor Esterhammer is the General Editor of The Edinburgh Edition of the Works of John Galt, and her ongoing work includes a monograph examining Galt’s role in shaping early nineteenth-century literary economies and transatlantic cultural exchange.
